Author Information

Hi everyone. Comics have been a part of my life for almost the last four decades, ever since my Uncle Pete used to bring me my monthly supply of “literature,” complete with Savage Swords of Conan and Thor comic books among others. All these years have earned me what you might call a certain “perspective” on things. It has also made me grumpy at times as some things about the industry have changed for the worse. So, at least once a week, I will write here about things that make me smile and other things that quite frankly annoy me. Not every week will be about comics, but I will keep a general focus on Superheroes, Sci Fi, and other other popular media stuff that I hope you, dear reader will find interesting. Agree or disagree with me. Call me an old man who doesn’t know his Skrull Invasion from a Cthulhu monster. Do whatever you like, just as long as you keep coming back.

The New 52-Justice League #1

Let me be the first to admit that I am woefully informed about what’s going on at DC comics regarding the restarting of their entire universe. My basic understanding is that as a result of the Flashpoint story arc, everything is going to be re-done and re-imagined. The first of the new books came out this week, Justice League #1. And, I have to say that so far, I kinda like it.

Things I enjoyed about the first issue:

1. Finally, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) is as cocky as one would imagine someone whose most vaunted trait is his will power. I mean, I’ve met bread makers who are more confident than the old Hal Jordan. A test pilot and a ring slinger should be more…well, more of an obnoxious bastard, and now he is!

2. Superman. We don’t get to see much of him, but he definitely comes across as a massively powerful being. The new outfit I think is pretty cool also. No more Depends, red adult diaper pants for the man of steel. But he’s otherwise left as sort of a mystery until next issue, touted as showing us “Batman vs Superman.” If Batman goes head to head with Supes, I will be disappointed. More than likely, Bats will use his superior intellect to…um…be clever while Superman is frying him to a crisp with his heat vision.

3. Batman so far is portrayed as a normal guy who is gifted as an acrobat and who has supreme fighting skills. He’s also shown as an accomplished pickpocket and as being good with cube-shaped puzzles. Favorite line from the book? Green Lantern says to Batman, “Hold on a second…You’re not just some guy in a bat costume, are you? ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!”

There are other little hints here and there about Cyborg, but mainly the first issue is about Batman, Green Lantern, and Superman. Three of the classics. I eagerly await next week to see what DC does with the other titles. So far, this first issue of JL just feels like an alternative universe storyline. But I think it’s worth picking up. Regardless of how good the first issue is, we will all have to wait and see what things are like when thisJLA#1 new universe of superheroes becomes more permanent.

Hi Kenneth! I will talk to the webmaster about this capability, but I’m not sure what the back end of the site will support. Very glad you enjoyed the post. Also, to Regina and stop snacking, thanks for the comments. Looking forward to talking to everyone about the new books next week!

Hmm. Assuming you are asking about the blog entry (versus the comic itself), it was written a couple of days ago. Friday late evening/morning I believe.
